Investing in a Sustainable Future: Plastics 2000’s 100kW Solar Installation
As part of our ongoing commitment to sustainability and responsible manufacturing, Plastics 2000 has continued to invest in initiatives that reduce our environmental impact while improving operational efficiency.
In 2025, we completed the installation of a 100kW solar power system at our manufacturing facility, marking another step towards a more sustainable future for both our business and our customers.
Harnessing Solar Energy
The new solar installation allows us to generate a significant portion of our electricity requirements directly from renewable energy. As a manufacturer that operates energy-intensive extrusion and recycling equipment, reducing reliance on grid-supplied electricity is an important part of our environmental strategy.
To maximise the benefits of solar generation, we schedule much of our recycling production during daylight hours when solar output is at its highest. This enables us to utilise more renewable energy on-site and further reduce the carbon footprint associated with our manufacturing operations.
Improving Energy Efficiency Across Our Facility
The solar installation forms part of a broader program of continuous improvement aimed at reducing energy consumption and increasing manufacturing efficiency.
Over recent years, Plastics 2000 has invested in modern machinery and upgraded equipment designed to deliver improved performance while using less energy than older technologies.
A key initiative has been the removal of older DC motor systems and their replacement with more efficient modern drive technologies. These upgrades allow our equipment to operate more efficiently while delivering greater reliability and process control.
We have also invested in a Power Factor Correction (PFC) unit, which helps optimise the way electricity is consumed throughout our facility. By improving power factor performance, the system reduces wasted energy and contributes to more efficient utilisation of electrical infrastructure.
Manufacturing Smarter, Not Longer
Sustainability is not only about reducing energy use. It is also about improving the efficiency of the manufacturing process itself.
At Plastics 2000, many of our production operations run continuously across 24-hour shifts. Continuous operation allows extrusion equipment to remain at stable operating conditions, reducing start-up and shutdown cycles that can contribute to material waste.
By maintaining consistent production schedules, we are able to:
- Reduce manufacturing scrap.
- Improve machine efficiency.
- Optimise energy consumption.
- Maximise the utilisation of raw materials.
These improvements help lower the environmental impact of production while ensuring consistent product quality for our customers.
Supporting a Circular Economy
Our investment in solar energy aligns with the work we undertake through our recycling operations. By processing recycled polyethylene and manufacturing high-quality flexible packaging solutions, we support the responsible use of materials throughout the supply chain.
Combining renewable energy generation with energy-efficient manufacturing practices enables us to further reduce the environmental footprint associated with producing polyethylene film and packaging products.
